The Oberlin Swing Society

This semester the Oberlin Swing Society will be hosting a weekend long Blues and Balboa intensive workshop taught by the illustrious Valerie Salstrom and her partner Matt Mitchell. The workshop will begin with a comprehensive beginner friendly exploration of Bal and Blues fundamentals and work up to an exploration of the awesome variety these two dances have to offer. There will be dancing Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with Bal-friendly Swing by evening and Blues by night. The Balboa lessons are on Saturday. There will be two 1-hour lessons focusing on technique followed by a 1.5-hour lesson full of moves and variations. Sunday’s focus is Blues, and will have the same class format. We are offering this workshop at a particularly affordable price to encourage more students to attend. We also hope to draw a big enough crowd to create an authentic Balboa atmosphere. (Balboa historically originated in overcrowded ballrooms where space was scarce.) We would love have a cozily packed dance floor perfect for Balboa, so come down and bring your friends!
